does formal ball mean formal attire?

There was a sign for a formal winter ball at out school.
We are planning to go and I want to know if this means formal attire like a prom or just dressed for a normal dance. So tux and gown or slacks and nice dress?

You should dress like you are going to a prom balls are often really fancy
It means dressed to the nines,and nice gentle waltzes and such,no disco,hip hop, funk,rappers in sight.
I think it means you have to wear like your really clean baseball outfit. Like the one you just got dry cleaned or where saving for the playoffs.

Ask the coordinators of the event. Formal ball usually means formal attire but maybe they had something else in mind.
